CANDIDATE STATEMENTS for NEW SOUTH WALES

Groups

TED MACK
MACK, Ted (192)
HABER, Ed (198)
Australia's administrative system or Constitution was framed in the 1890s to unite six English colonies - a world that no longer exists. It needs a major restructure to face the twenty-first century.
We cannot successfully continue with nine governments and legal systems, 15 Houses of Parliament, 842 MPs and their bureaucracies, all locked in an endless conflict.
While the Head of State should not be changed simply to address historical sectarian or racist grievance, an independent democracy cannot rely on hereditary or appointed leaders. We must have the right and responsibility to directly elect our Head of State.

AUSTRALIAN REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT
Thanks to the courage and hard work of Australians, this is the best country in the world.
So why can't an Australian be our Head of State?
We deserve a Head of State who is proud to be Australian.
We deserve a Head of State who is one of us.
TURNBULL, Malcolm (123)
Chair, Australian Republican Movement. Australia needs a Head of State who's first allegiance is to Australia. Our Head of State should be one of us.
MACHIN, Wendy (255)
As a former National Party Minister, mother and involved citizen, I believe having our own Head of State is above party politics.
WRAN, Neville (243)
My experience as NSW Premier and my involvement in business has taught me our future lies in the Asia Pacific region as an independent nation.
SOWADA, Karin (163)
Former Australian Democrats' Senator, now Museum curator, involved in the Anglican Church. I want my daughter to grow up in an Australia that's genuinely independent.
GROGAN, Peter (126)
Former country solicitor, teacher, football coach, AIDS activist. I believe we should all have a say in how our Head of State represents Australia's diversity.
GEORGE, Jennie (117)
President, ACTU. Coming from a migrant family I know Australia has been shaped by the efforts of workers. They should be represented at the Convention.
ALLEN, Roger (190)
Building a computer business with 50 offices around the world taught me you have to be independent to succeed. As a country so should Australia.
IRVING, Helen (159)
My academic background has taught me that when the Australian people wrote our Constitution, they saw Australia eventually becoming independent. The Republic makes it happen.
KENEALLY, Thomas (150)
As a writer I try to interpret Australia to readers. An Australian Head of State can interpret us to the world at the highest level.
BEREJIKLIAN, Gladys (102)
As the 1997 NSW President of the Young Liberals I know that young Australians want to forge our own identity as an independent nation.
CROWE, Stephen (244)
As a footballer with the Knight's Premiership winning team I'm proud of Newcastle and Australia. I'll be even prouder with an Australian Head of State.
HAWKE, Hazel (246)
Heritage Council Chair. Having combined raising children and public life, I value tradition and change. Both are relevant to our children's and grandchildren's future.
MARINOS, Lex (107)
Actor, writer, broadcaster, Director Carnivale, Deputy Chair, Australia Council. I love the arts, sport and Australia. Now's the time for our own Head of State.
SUTTON, Judith Isobel (215)
As an ordinary North Coast citizen, teacher and artist, I live in Murwillumbah. I'm more than ever convinced Australia needs our own Head of State.
TOTARO, Paolo (137)
Founding Chair NSW Ethnic Affairs Commission. Former Australian Law Reform Commissioner. Our own Head of State will draw together Australia's wonderfully diverse mix of people.
MORAN, Patricia (225)
We must convince the world we believe in ourselves, that we are a mature, independent nation. An Australian Head of State will help achieve this.
MOSELMANE, Shaoquett (218)
As a young Australian, having an Australian Head of State will mean greater prosperity as we build closer regional ties. Be part of making history.
KELLY, Rose (191)
As a young Australian, from the North Coast, I want to acknowledge Australia's uniqueness. Give young people an Australia to strive for and believe in.
FALINSKI, Jason (266)
As Young Liberals' National President and member of the Liberal Party's Federal Executive, I'm proudly Australian. That's why I support an Australian Head of State.
WANNOUS, Rania (239)
As a young woman from Bankstown the Republic's vital to unifying Australia. Building on our strength and diversity, it gives us hope for the future.

CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (FRED NILE GROUP)
WEBSTER, Alasdair P (208)
McLENNAN, Graham C (114)
The Australian Constitution has served Australians well. We support a continued Constitutional Monarchy.
The preamble of our Constitution declares our reliance on God, it must be retained.
Second, the Constitution, through the authority of the Monarch, acknowledges that the only, final legitimate authority occurs under God as revealed through the Bible.
These wise provisions, made by Australia's forefathers must be retained to provide the essential spiritual shield for Australia, under which our nation will continue to be protected and blessed.
Our mission is to present these facts to the Convention.
Alasdair Webster B.A., Former M.H.R.
Dr Graham McLennan, Dentist, Orange.

CITIZENS FOR AN ELECTED PRESIDENT
RUSH, James S (229)
RYAN, Laurence D (193)
Australia ostensibly acquired nationhood in 1901. But it has taken the whole century to gradually assert our independence which logically cannot be achieved fully until we become a Republic.
Our members have extensive backgrounds in private enterprise and the public sector. They are staunch Republicans who believe nevertheless, that the Commonwealth is a unifying force in the world. We propose that our new Republic remain a member nation.
Whilst we applaud the Keating initiative in proposing a Republic we differ from some Republicans in our strong belief that the Australian people themselves should directly elect their own President.

HAGERTY, Laurence (253)
CASSIDY, Jim (268)
CASSIDY, James (129)
STEWART, Lex (105)
Changing the head of State will not address the critical issues; changes to the rules (constitution) that control politicians/government will.
The Constitution shall belong to the people, and be retained as amended by the people, placing Politicians, Government and Courts effectively under the peoples' control.
A body of elected Australian citizens be established to enforce the rules that limit politicians (government) as entrenched in the Constitution.
The people only, (not Politicians) shall have constitutional right to put forward amendments to the Constitution.
The amended Constitution shall include all the fundamental principles of common law that the people trust to maintain their freedom.
Following the amendments, the re-drafted Constitution shall go to referendum.
The above principles are essential to restore integrity to government, and hope and prosperity to all Australians.
Australia must re-establish Australian owned manufacturing, farming and mining industries and limit politicians ability to sellout or destroy them, this will ensure jobs and the prosperity of Australia and its people. This can only be guaranteed if the people have effective control of government.
The existing system where destructive, complicated, oppressive taxation and interest is imposed on Australians while foreign and multinationals escape virtually untaxed must be reversed
The Constitution is the only means available to people to control politicians and government. To be effective there must be an elected body responsible directly to the people, charged with enforcing the rules laid down in the Constitution.
Have your say, empower the people, empower yourself; vote one for the Alternative Three team. For information, Alternative Three. Box 270 St Marys 2670. Ph. 02-9623-6177 Fax 02-9826-1670.

A JUST REPUBLIC
O'SHANE, Pat (156)
MAITLAND, John (206)
THOMPSON, Patrick (179)
SLADE, Ben (197)
McMANUS, Sally (106)
McRAE-McMAHON, Dorothy (121)
SILVA, Lee (172)
The Republic debate presents a significant opportunity for Australians to take control of our collective life, by entrenching principles of equality, fairness and ecological sustainability in our new Constitution.
We must not continue with our current monarchist Constitution nor should we accept a "minimalist republic".
Vote for A Just Republic:

Not Just A Republic.
Our candidates are: Pat O'Shane (magistrate); John Maitland (trade union leader); Patrick Thompson (environmentalist); Ben Slade (legal aid lawyer); Sally McManus (trade union organiser); Dorothy McRae-McMahon (Uniting Church Minister); Lee Silva (Chairperson, Redfern Aboriginal Corporation).

DUNMORE LANG COLLEGE
ALLAN, Prudence (195)
MONTGOMERY, Hayes M (141)
Dunmore Lang College supports the role of educated young Australians debating the constitutional future of our country. The College has nominated two outstanding students for election because of their ability to participate in the debate in an intelligent, informed way. Our candidates understand the background to the debate and will go to Canberra with open minds to listen to all the arguments for and against change. The outcome of the convention process should provide political stability, national unity, and international credibility.
(Dunmore Lang College is a residential college for men and women located on the campus of Macquarie University, Sydney).

GREENS, BILL OF RIGHTS, INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
The Australian Greens, the Australian Bill of Rights Group and the Australian Indigenous Peoples Party support the republic. For us, the most important question is what kind of republic will serve Australians in the twenty-first century. We would like to see the Constitution protect the environment, recognise basic rights and responsibilities and acknowledge the first Australians. Any move to a republic ought to give everybody a fair go, including future generations.
MOORE, Catherine (168)

AUSTRALIAN RECONCILIATION
We stand for justice, recognition and respect for Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. The Constitution should acknowledge all human history in this land. The Commonwealth Parliament should have special responsibility to make laws for the benefit of the indigenous peoples. We support a republic based on reconciliation and recognition.
BURNEY, Linda (202)
A mature, united Australia will be possible if our Constitution and people fully recognise the heritage/rights of indigenous peoples. It's important for all Australians.
RIDGEWAY, Aden (160)
The Constitution stands for "inclusive democracy". Do not let us, as Indigenous Australians, become persons absent from our consciousness, our deliberations and our daily lives.
McCARTHY, Wendy (188)
Reconciliation is the heart of the matter. A people's movement can make it happen so that Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders miss out no longer.
BRENNAN, Frank (242)
Australia does not have a royal family. We do have indigenous peoples. The Constitution should be based on facts. We need a republic with reconciliation.

REPUBLICANS FOR MORE THAN MINIMALIST DEMOCRACY
KNELL, Rob (146)
CROUCHER, Bob (174)
"Only a base, vile, insignificant country can be democratic." - Benito Mussolini
At Federation we inherited Britain's Monarchy and their rather minimal democracy. Perhaps appropriate for a newborn Nation, but now, almost a century later, we've outgrown both.
The change in our level of education plus modern communications allows us to take a greater share of our own governance than voting for Party "A" or Party "B" every few years.
We'd push the Convention to investigate how best to become a truly Democratic Republic.
"Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you could do with your country."

COMMUNITY REPUBLICANS (POPULAR ELECTION OF PRESIDENT)
We are grassroots Republicans advocating maximum citizen participation in constitutional, electoral and government reform.
We completely trust fellow Australians to select the Head-of-State, and regulate presidential powers.
Our Elders are wise enough, our Country People experienced enough, our Indigenous People forgiving enough, our Youth enthusiastic enough, our Immigrants courageous enough!
CONSANDINE, Peter (252)
National Executive Director/Party Founder (1982);
Produced many Republic-related works;
Conducted 246 Community Republican Street Fairs Australia-wide (1991-1997);
Activist Republican for 26 years.
KATELARIS, Connie (101)
Physician, Westmead Hospital; Strong supporter of Community Republicans' platform; advocates equality of opportunity for all Australians, Bill of Rights, Australia's future as a Constitutional Republic.
GILCHRIST, Neil (113)
MBA (Public Sector Administration); M.Comm (Information Systems); Computer Analyst/Programmer, Chairman NSW Henry George Foundation, fluent Italian French languages. Primary Concerns: Electoral, Parliamentary, Tax Reform.
CRENNAN, Elizabeth (104)
Longtime catalyst for social change.
Founder, rural Futures Forum (Bellingen).
Vision: Bringing wisdom, open-mindedness to creating independent, sovereign Australia through true individual participation by all.
BUCKLEY, Brian (165)
Accountant. Oberon-based. Republican, 30 years. Author: "Dawning of a Republic" (2nd edition pending). Advocates popular election of the Australian President with defined constitutional powers.

GODFREY BIGOT'S TRADITIONAL FAMILY VALUES PARTY
BIGOT, Godfrey (153)
Gidday. This Convention will be wonderful; a fantastic junket. I'll mingle with celebrity windbags, and the golf-course is nearby. As President of Australian Constitutional Monarchists, I've been intimate with the entire Royal family; including the corgis. I've played twister with the Queen Mother and disco-danced with Charlie. Being a christian, I've discouraged toe-sucking, (and other perversions one expects only from the priesthood). My supporters include; my girlfriend - Pauline Hanson, her associates - Herman Goering, John Howard, Hugh Hefner, and, notably, Alan Jones; he's right behind me. Let Bigot speak for the Monarchists - Give them what they deserve.
KENNEDY, Jon (220)
Ugh?!

ELECT THE PRESIDENT
HANNAN, William (119)
VAN DEN HOUT, Patricia (259)
CAMERON, Roger (200)
JACKA, William (112)
HANNAN, Luke (167)
DOBBIN, Benjamin (166)
HANNAN, Liam (118)
CURRAN, Christopher Francis (248)
WATKINS, Paul (171)
HANNAN, Alicia (125)
HANNAN, Geoffrey (199)
HANNAN, Georgia (109)
KWAN, Julian (265)
HAYSON, Matthew (183)
SHORT, Warwick (241)
Each Australian must have the right to vote for the President of Australia or Head of State. A vote for "Elect the President" is a vote for yourself having the right to vote for the President instead of letting members of Parliament have the exclusive role of deciding who will be President. The Head of Australia has previously been decided by politicians who appoint mates, or judges. Australia is more than politicians and High Court Judges. Australia is a diverse society. All Australians regardless of their sex, race, religion, or who they know, must have the opportunity and right to stand and vote for the President of Australia.
Australia has come of age since Federation, almost a century ago. Our society is far richer and more culturally diverse. Great Britain also has moved on and is now much closer to Europe. As we enter the third millennium, we must do so as a truly independent nation, maintaining our historical links but in a way that no longer reflects symbolic subservience to anyone.
Recent events demonstrate the monarchy is out of touch with community values and respect for the individual and is losing its relevance in modern England. It is even less relevant to the people of Australia, some 20,000 kilometres distant.
By electing the President, we can demand that the President stays in touch with people and community standards and focuses on Australia and the needs of all Australians. By abandoning the class structure inherent in a monarchy, we can ensure that our children are encouraged to respect people based on their character and contribution to Australia, rather than on class or race.
The protection of democracy and the Australian way of life requires that the people of Australia have the right to vote for the President who must be accountable to the people at regular elections, not to Canberra politicians who are remote from people's needs. An elected President will have greater independence and standing. While politicians may not like this, it ensures the President is truly able to represent all Australians.
Few Australians have the money and time to join political groups to influence the actions of Government. The President of Australia will protect and represent all those who can't afford to join political groups. The President of Australia will be there to protect you and your families' rights. Make sure you have the right to vote for who the President will be by voting for William Hannan (Elect the President).

WOMEN FOR A JUST REPUBLIC
A new century needs a new constitution which ensures that women play an active and equal role in shaping Our Nation. For Australia to be truly democratic we need a republican constitution that guarantees this equality. This issue must be considered at the convention, then proposed to you by referendum.
DUNCAN, Darelle (155)
I am a school principal and member of the Australian Women's Party. At the Convention of 1897 no women were present. Elect women this time.
MANTEL, Alice (145)
As a lawyer and member of the Australian Women's Party, attending the Convention means making a future republic more equitable and representative of modern society.

AUSTRALIAN MONARCHIST LEAGUE
Our Constitution has for 100 years produced stable constitutional government and protection of our democracy and freedoms that cannot be guaranteed in a republic.
You can continue that protection for yourself and your children by rejecting the uncertainties of republics and voting for the Australian Monarchist League Garland Team.

PUSH FOR THE FUTURE
Here's my propaganda:-
I love the indefinable Aussie spirit.
I love Aussie films like Mad Max, and bands like T.I.S.M. that can only come from Australia.
I hate boring, self-indulgent, politicians who don't listen to people.
Surely it's time for fresh ideas after more than 200 years. Let's go!

Is non political;
Gives best future Government, of, for, by, the Australian people.

ELLIS, Bob (154)

INDEPENDENT REPUBLICAN
Historian. Author "A Cargo of Women". Magazine and newspaper columnist. Formerly Chief Executive NSW Bar. "Too often Australia's defining moments have been to the timetable of others. INDEPENDENT AUSTRALIAN

REPUBLICANS FOR A HELLUVALOT MORE DEMOCRACY
We vote, and they crow,
"We have a mandate!"
(and do just what they please)

POCKLINGTON, John (132)
My aim is to help write a proposed constitution in plain english for everybody to read and understand.
The Constitution belongs to the people so should be written in words understood by everybody.
I'll support only minimal changes to the present constitution.

REPUBLICAN INDEPENDENT FOR DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT

Upholds status quo but questions High Court's role and media's record.

DENNIS, Bruce (201)
I want to represent your interests.
I live with my wife and four children aged thirteen to three.
Our constitution must now be reviewed to ensure that Australia is set on a more independent course for the next 100 years with a head of state who is an Australian.

FOX, Stephen John (110)
INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE FOR A FEDERAL REPUBLIC
I decided to be a candidate at this election because I believe that both the monarchy and the present Australian Constitution are out of date and should be abolished now.
I want to maintain the federal system under a new modern constitution which is easier to amend.

BROWNE, Malcolm (256)
ALTERNATIVE CHOICES FOR AN AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC
An Australian republic is coming sooner or later. What arrives is up to you.
This is not a time to borrow existing models from other societies.
The "Alternative Choices for an Australian Republic" independent candidate will ensure relevant and serious alternatives are presented. That represent real Australia, traditional and modern.

MITCHELL, Shirley (140)
AN UNBIASED RURAL VOICE
A rural and remote country candidate.
A business woman who is involved with many organisations at local regional and state level and who can ably represent grass roots communities.
Experience with different types of government has been gained through overseas travel.
An independent and non-partisan candidate.

McGEE, Terry D (258)
RECOGNISE SPECIAL BRITIC RELATIONSHIP IN CONSTITUTION
Complete independence does not exist. While working with Asia and the world the de-facto "special relationship" between Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales and Eire that has been obscured and subordinated to the monarchy should be recognised, clarified, renegotiated, revitalised and formally incorporated into our constitution, not forgotten.

HEWITT, Glenda (224)
I CARE ABOUT AUSTRALIA'S FUTURE
The question is, 'what is best for our nation?'. It's important to be open minded on the pros and cons of a republic and committed to searching for the best solution for Australia's future. As a non-aligned independent, this is the approach I will take at the Constitutional Convention.

BANKS, Robin (189)
A REPUBLIC FOR ALL AUSTRALIANS
I am the Co-ordinator of a Community Legal Centre for people with disabilities.
I will promote an Australian Republic with a Constitution that reflects:

and ensures a Head of State without party-political ties.

CULL, Kim (177)

BAILEY, Jim (103)
AUTHOR "THE BUSH TELEGRAPH" REPUBLICAN
Visit Internet address "eyecan.com.au" to read my views published in "The Bush Telegraph".
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" mantra Monarchists. Wrong! Australia's assets are being squandered by an ossified system of government. Only radical change can break interests vested in our status quo. Go Republic!

KING, Jonathan (152)
"FAIR GO" CONSTITUTION FOR ALL AUSTRALIANS
An independent Political Scientist, Historian, author of "Fight for Federation" and heritage champion who defeated bureaucrats for Bicentennial First Fleet Tall Ships Expedition, I'll fight for popular Australian values, Westminster Democracy, Bill of Rights and a plain English, modern, commonsense 'fair go', constitution protecting and reflecting wishes of ordinary people.

FORSYTH, Ian (221)
REPUBLIC - HOW AND WHEN?
The Convention is to:

Outcomes of the Convention must support good governance for all Australians into the future.

IVOR, F (227)
IVOR, F
I am much more interested in improving our Constitution to return power where it should be - us.
The debate republic v monarchy is a minor issue.
This is our chance to make parliament far more responsible.
It certainly has not been responsible this meny years.
This is our opportunity.

LUCAS, Richard J (187)
RICHARD J LUCAS (INDEPENDENT)
Vote 1 Richard J Lucas
(B.A. DipEd. J.P.)
Your community voice for an input for a new Australian Constitution.
Proven community involvement.
Concerned for total reconcilliation with all Australians to grow and go forward together as one people with one voice to the new Republic.

GOURLEY, Alan (257)
CONSTITUTIONAL HERITAGE PROTECTION SOCIETY
Dear Elector,
Are you confident you are truthfully informed and understand possible consequences of changing our Constitution?
All I ask: check internet:
www.ozemail.com.au/~agourley
or send a stamped/addressed, 11x22cm envelope to: Constitution, PO Box Q381, NSW 1230 and then trust your own common sense.
Best wishes, Alan Gourley

SECCOMBE, Ian (209)
PEOPLES PROTECTOR PARTY
Monarchy gave stability but change comes. The name republic is tarnished - American glitz; African dictatorship. We want a commonwealth with elected Peoples Protector who can nudge or dismiss Parliament.
No privileged groups in the Constitution.
Qualifications: M.A.; completing Dip Law Former primary principal, state councillor to Teachers Federation; Liberal Party.

SCHNEIDER, Quentin (211)
DINKUM BOSS-COBBERS: NO ELECTORAL FAVOURITISM
Electoral selection: favouritism; egotism; cronyism. An inherently divisive way to determine Australia's symbolic Head-of-State.
Our 'People's' Constitution should:
(a) clearly establish Australia's Constitutional Monarchy without religious/gender/etc. bias;
(b) uniquely recognise the First Australians (perhaps through a joint symbolic Head-of-State, where separate indigenous figurehead symbolises territorial (as opposed to political) sovereignty.)

BERGIN, Brian (249)
BRIAN BERGIN FOR THE AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC
Subjects or citizens? Our tired institutions and ethically inadequate leaders have us anchored in the past. Let's rethink our Constitution and replace yesterday's monarchs with our own Presidents... Australian Presidents with integrity and moral leadership, to show our grandkids the way forward... Presidents who we, the Australian people, elect!

PARKINSON, David (267)
DAVID PARKINSON, A RURAL PERSPECTIVE
Rural New South Wales' interests must not be dominated by metropolitan and idealistic viewpoints in the Constitutional debate. Avoid domination by vested interests: elect a non-party, independent voice backed by twenty years as an elected rural local government representative.
I stand for an Australian Constitution modernised through minimal change.

FISHER, David (205)
TRUE INDEPENDENCE
I see this as my chance to help make Australia a truly independent country, by including all Australian's opinions in an open and fair debate that will determine the direction this country will take constitutionally, and, hopefully, in the process, make everyone proud to be an Australian.

RICKARD, Timothy J (217)
INDEPENDENT REPUBLICAN
It's time for Australia to achieve genuine independence by appointing an Australian as Head of State.
The fundamental principles of our current system should be retained in the republic model.
Formerly a lawyer, banker and political adviser, now General Manager of a Sydney engineering business. Married with two young children.

LODER, Kaye (228)
AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN
As "the voice of working women" Business and Professional Women's priority is to ensure women are well represented at the Constitutional Convention. Their views need to be heard as part of the debate.
My personal opinion is that Australians are mature enough to become citizens of a republic.

ERGLIS, Evalds (261)
INDEPENDENT

HENRY, Catherine (120)
BILL OF RIGHTS FOR AUSTRALIA
The most important features of any constitution are the peoples' rights protected by it, yet our Australian Constitution contains no such safeguards. This convention is your opportunity to guarantee the rights all Australians take for granted and to ensure fundamental freedoms are preserved for future generations

DAVIS, Brian Robert (237)
RETAIN THE MONARCHY
We have a unique constitution.
Only the Australian people can change it.
I will ensure that questions put to the people maintain that people power.
I am a supporter of Citizen Initiated referenda.
All Republican models seen to date diminish people power in favour of increased power to politicians.

RIDER, Steve (131)
AUSTRALIAN REPUBLICAN WORKER'S PARTY
The Australian Republican Workers Party will endeavour to represent the voice of the workers of this country.
I will put forward a strong voice for change to the constitutional framework of Australia.
For too long Australian workers have been shackled by the chains of our royal colonial masters. Break free!

WILLCOX, B (263)
PRIVATE CITIZEN
When Britain committed to Europe in the 1960's, a change to our Constitution became inevitable.
Neither the British royal court nor the pretend royal court of America is the right model.
Our Constitution must reflect the equality and pragmatism which characterises the Australian community.

OWEN, Andrew (223)
ANDREW OWEN
I am 25 years old, Born in Coffs Harbour and raised in Colyton. I seek the faith, the wisdom and, the courage to do what is right in the years to come. 200 years ago we built a nation, now it is time to find a home.
Give me ago.

MARSHALL, Ted (222)
CONDITIONAL REPUBLIC
Former Senior Court Officer (Govt. Dept.)
Any proposed Republic should be conditional upon the President being chosen and elected by fair and free vote of the people and not by Parliament.
The President should represent the people and not be bound to Political Party directives.
His powers should be substantial.

CROSS, Merv (170)
INTERDEPENDENT
As a First Fleeter I feel responsible to ensure that our heritage is not destroyed.
Australia needs to develop its own interdependent autonomy without losing its magnificent traditions.
Links with Britain need to be severed without undermining the foundations of our excellent Constitution.
The head of state must be Australian.

SMITH, Tony (142)
LET'S CLARIFY ALL REPUBLIC OPTIONS
As a lecturer at Sydney University's Orange Campus I have taught constitutional Law for eight years.
I have participated in both "Australia Consults" programs, the Bathurst Peoples' Convention 1996 and am involved in the 1997 local constitutional conventions.
I want to clarify republic options and help the public understand them.

MASIAN, Sennie (115)
BELIEVES IN REPUBLIC AND MULTICULTURAL AUSTRALIA
I believe in a government that is democratic, independent, innovative and stable with leaders who are progressive thinkers, compassionate and fair to all citizens regardless of colour, age, gender, religion, education and economic status.
I believe in a society that values diversity and respect migrants and their contributions.

GALLAGHER, Mick (231)
TRUE INDEPENDENT
It is important that independent arbitrators are elected to represent you, consider all points raised from both sides and raise matters of Constitutional concern.
The Republic debate will not solve unemployment, foreign debt or our economy. Are we being divided again for political purposes? - Let's debate.
Any concerns 015465586.

THOMAS, Leigh James (213)
REPUBLICAN FOR AUSTRALIA
I will be standing for a republic by minimal change with an elected president by the people.
I will also be advocating a Bill of Rights to be included in the rewriting of the constitution.
Thank you for your support.

BYRNE, Marliene (203)
MARLIENE BYRNE INDEPENDENT REPUBLICAN
Let our people speak. As a modern independent nation we must have an Australian Head of State, popularly elected, promoting Australian values and serving a reconciled Australian Republic; a Republic celebrating our diverse cultures and encouraging all our people to reach their full potential through peace, order and good government.

NEUSS, Phillip (214)
AUSTRALIA'S HOLIDAY COAST NORTHERN NSW REPUBLICAN
Please consider! I'm not a tall poppy - and its important for real people to give a country perspective to balance city power. I'll press for logical sensible change. I attended the Peoples Constitutional Convention in Bathurst in November 1996. I'm well informed, widely read, travelled allover and moderate. Vote 1.

SWEETING, David (147)
UNIQUE AUSTRALIAN ROYAL FAMILY
Minimum change: The Australian Monarch can no longer be the Monarch of another country.
This preserves Australia's highly stable form of government.
i.e. Hereditary head of state, Democratically elected parliament, Autocratic parties and Bureaucratic public service.
The media can focus on Australia's own princes and princesses, supporting people and charities.

SHEPHERD, Bruce D (238)
I've always fought for what I believe in; deaf children, with the AMA, patients and doctors.
Republic or Monarchy I would like to help to see us governed so all Australians may better achieve their potential.
Australia will be different after this convention - we must get it right.
