CANDIDATE STATEMENTS for TASMANIA

Groups

TASMANIAN GREENS
CROSSLEY, Louise (112)
WILSON, John (121)
O'HALLORAN, Paul (102)
The Tasmanian Greens strongly support a Republic. It's inevitable. What we really need to debate is what kind of republic will serve Australians best for the next century of Federation.
We will push for the Convention to address broader reform of the Australian Constitution including:
* recognition of the prior occupation of Australia by indigenous peoples
* a Bill of Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship
* acknowledgment of our obligations to the global environment and to future generations
Dr Louise Crossley is an ecological economist and planning consultant from Huonville; Dr John Wilson is a Lecturer in Nursing, University of Tasmania, Launceston; Paul O'Halloran is a Senior Teacher, Don College, Devonport.

ALTERNATIVE THREE
CAMPBELL, Bob (111)
BISSETT, David I (107)
GIBBS, Richard James (117)
Changing the head of state is not the answer, changes to the rules that control politicians and government are essential.
The Constitution must be amended by the people (not politicians) placing politicians, government and Courts under the people's control.
A body of elected people must be set up to enforce the rules that limit politicians and government.
The amended Constitution must include all the principles of common law that the people trust in to maintain their freedom.
Local, State and Federal systems of government shall be enshrined in the Constitution.
Following the people's amendments, the re-drafted Constitution must be put to a referendum.
The above principles are essential to return integrity to government and prosperity to Australia.
ALTERNATIVE THREE, the voice for the people.

THE AUSTRALIAN MONARCHIST LEAGUE
Our Constitution has for 100 years produced stable constitutional Government and protection of our democracy and freedoms that cannot be guaranteed in a Republic. You can continue that protection for yourself and your children by rejecting the uncertainties of Republics and voting for the Australian Monarchist League Mitchell team.
MITCHELL, David Charles (113)
B.A., LL.M., Ph.D., Tasmanian born and educated, understands Constitution from study and lifetime experience in law and government service in Australia and overseas. No Republic!
DUNCAN, Simeon Andrew Roberts (122)
23 year old retail store manager urging Australians "to reject the uncertainties of a Republic and vote for the Australian Monarchist League Mitchell team."

NO REPUBLIC - ACM
KENNEDY, Doone (118)
CASTLE, Michael Anthony (106)
HOPE-JOHNSTONE, Elspeth (108)
MAYNARD, Luke (114)
DAINTREE, David (104)
O'FARRELL, Edward (101)
We, Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, firmly believe that our present Australian Constitution is the finest in the world. For nearly a century it has served our Nation very well. Under it we have built a peace loving, democratic, fully independent Commonwealth. Under it we have rights and freedoms which are the envy of the rest of the world. Whilst no Constitution is ever perfect and whilst changes from time to time will come about through the Referendum process we believe that these changes should only occur after very detailed consideration.
The Republicans want to tear up our Australian Constitution and then to tear up our Australian National Flag. Even their so-called 'minimalist' approach would involve 70 amendments to the Constitution. If our Constitution ain't broke - why fix it? Worse still, why endanger and destroy the Constitutional fabric of this Nation by pulling out a few threads at random. Once threads are pulled out the whole concept of 'one indissoluble Federal Commonwealth under the Crown' will be destroyed forever. Do not vote to destroy our precious rights and freedoms as Australians - vote NO REPUBLIC - ACM.

AUSTRALIAN REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT
Thanks to the courage and hard work of Australians, this is the best country in the world.
So, why can't an Australian be our Head of State?
We deserve a Head of State who is proud to be Australian.
We deserve a Head of State who is one of us.
GREEN, Julian Ormond (116)
I support an Australian Republic as it would give Australia its own true identity and give real meaning to being an Australian.
SCOTT, Marguerite (119)
I believe a Republic that protects our democratic rights and freedoms, with our own Head of State, will give Australians stability, strength and true independence.
BOYCE, Peter (115)
Emeritus Professor, Department of Government, University of Tasmania. Former Vice-Chancellor and Professor in Western Australian and Queensland Universities. Specialist research on governors-general and governors. AO.
FITZGERALD, Lynne (103)
I passionately want Australia to be a truly independent country, with its citizens' rights enshrined in the Constitution, and an Australian as Head of State.
HARRINGTON, Noel (105)
I'm just an ordinary bloke who sees that Australia needs its own identity through the movement of people together. We can accomplish this.
COCKER, Penny (110)
Australia will become truly independent, reflecting our traditional independence of spirit, only when we are a republic, with our own Head of State.

Ungrouped candidates

WATSON, Reg A (109)
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FLAG ASSOCIATION (TASMANIA)
My Association and I, have had a high profile in defending and promoting our present Constitutional Monarchical System, which is the best in the world. Headed by a Christian Monarch, it richly reflects our national ideals. It is important that we retain something as grand. I will reinforce that.

GAFFNEY, Michael V (120)
INDEPENDENT REPUBLICAN
Married, aged 37, PE/Health Teacher. A number of issues need to be thoroughly examined at the Constitutional Convention and will have long term implications for all Australians. If elected I would welcome the opportunity to hear your views and forward your concerns. Personally, "It's time to stand on our own."

LOCKETT, Eric (100)
VOICE OF ORDINARY, FAIR-MINDED, THINKING CITIZENS
Reclaim your Convention! Stop it becoming a winner-take-all battle between politicians, lawyers, monarchists and republicans, each pushing their own barrows.
Our head of state must be truly above politics.
I will speak for forgotten Australians so the Convention produces fair, widely-acceptable outcomes.
Tasmania's only ungrouped, non-aligned candidate.
